Reflection

Experience: This assignment was a lot of fun but challenging. I was nervous when deciding on a location to shoot. I spent my time walking around the city (La Jolla) I chose to shoot in. La Jolla is well kept up and clean, so I was determined to find a street with a grungy character that could add contrast to La Jolla’s perfection. I ended up deciding on an alley right by the downtown. I walked throughout the alley to get a good sense of what was in my environment. When I started shooting, it was overcast, and by the end of my shoot, the sun had come out. The change in lighting was problematic, but I was able to adapt.

Learning: I should have thought about the light and potential weather changes before deciding when and where to shoot. There were a couple of objects I found unique but chose not to include because of their exposure. Overall I became much better at utilizing my aperture and shutter speed to get the images exposed to my liking. I also learned how to adjust to shooting objects that are shaded and how to use the shadows to change the feeling of the image.

Future Application: In the future, I will consider the weather and potential changes days before shooting. I plan to pick a shoot day in advance based on these factors and then recheck the weather on the morning of the shoot. I also will think about the distance of the objects in my studio before shooting because that will affect my exposure, so it is crucial that I can get close enough.

Additional Photo (Not Part Of The Assignment Submission)

I shot this photo vertically, and it was one of my favorites. Since I wanted to crop it to make its’ frame completely white, I decided not to submit it as one of my graded pieces, but I wanted to include it because I loved it.
